Chief Instructor Sensei Katsunori Kanaya

It is great sadness that I inform you all that Kanaya Sensei has passed away with cancer a couple of days ago. Kanaya Sensei was a very good technical teacher of the fundamentals. Our thoughts and prays go to is wife, children and students in their time of loss.

March News

Hi all

Sharing the Club Updates

Pub Charity Tournament

We had 5 students participate in the Pub Charity Tournament over the week end and did average winning one bronze medal.

First up was Karen in the 40+ age group 10-6th Kyu development Kata. Karen first kata did not go to well as nerves got the better of her. Her second Kata went much better but was not good enough to go through to the 2nd round. Karen did not do any Kumite - Next time she will.

Mike was next up and in a massive group for 16yrs + group - It was the premium group with the current NZ champ in it. Mike did Bassadia which unfortunately he never completed and never progressed.

Mikes Kumite was in this same massive group and his 1st draw was up against the NZ champ. Although Mike showed a spirited attack at times he lost his match. I think he was undone by Brendon’s speed and aggression, Things we need to work on. Mike got pulled through to a rep per charge and had a hard fought battle but finished second by 2 points in this match, this was the end of Mikes progression.

Emio was up in his kata division Boys 10/11 yrs old 6 - 4th Kyu. Although doing a impressive Heian Jondan he never progressed past the first round losing 2-1 It was close and as a biased coach I certainly thought he did the better kata.

Emio put up a spirited fight but scoring was hard to come by, losing the fight by judges decision 2-1after a scoreless bout, No matter Emio we will work on your speed and clean scoring shots although I think you scored a couple that did not count.

Jamie only participated Boys 9/10 9-6th Kyu in kata and did a fine Heain Sandan lost against the eventual winner.  It was just a great challenge to get Jamie competing and I thought he did rather well picking up his kata to a different level.

Alec was next up in the Boys 6/7 9-6th Kyu. Alec did Heian Shodan for his first round but lost, he was pulled through on re-per charge and did His kata much better and won the bout - This was for 3rd , Alec Won his  and JKS first medal, Well done Alec !

Alec Kumite went extremely well and won his first fight with 7 points. He found out how to score a sanbon with , and repeated it twice. I am not sure who was more surprised Alec or myself. In Alec second and 3rd round he did not go to well and was a little over enthusiastic in trying to get points and was not able to get a clean scoring shot in.

I will have photo’s up on the website this weekend.

December News

Wow what a busy month for JKS North shore.

It all started off with Sensei Cooper and myself flying off to Aussie to attend a incredible 5 days of training with Sensei Yamagushi (6th Dan, JKS Chief instructor). This was a very hard 5 days but incredibly rewarding. We covered of all the Junro kata’s, Tekki Ni-dan series and Bassai sho , Hangetsu and Kanku Sho.

We also ran through a variety of Kihon drills that are not a standard in the syllabus, lot of spinning, plenty of kick Mae-geri, Yoko-geri, Mawashi-geri, Ushiro-geri and ushiromawashi-geri. Plenty of punches, After all this we still managed to fit in a hour + of kumite drills.4 hours per day for 5 days was a huge challenge but well worth it.

I am looking forward to Sensei Yamagushi’s visit in September. This will be a massive treat for us and will take our knowledge to a different level.

Auckland Kyu Grade Karate Championships

Report On the Tournament

On the 17th October we attended the Auckland Kyu Grade Karate Championships.

With Good High expectations we had 4 students attend

1st up was Slavjan in his kata event

Slavan did Heian Nidan and won his first ever kata Bout putting him into the finals, He then did Heian Shodan and won the finals. Gold for his very first Tournament was a fantastic result. Next came his Kumite although he did not do so well he did win one event giving him the Bronze medal.

2nd Up was Alec for the 6 year old category. Alex did not win a medal in his kata or Kumite but he did show a tremendous fighting spirit and showed there is huge potential. This was Alec first every tournament.

3rd Up was Emio, he did a wonderful Heian Yondan in the finals but unfortunately lost out due to technical error and won the Silver

Emio had a big draw for his kumite and was facing opponents that where in years of karate far more advanced. He did however manage to win a couple of place. Emio placed fourth in this event.

Luke Allen was the last competitor and did 2 wonderful Kata's that surely would of won if it was not for taking a couple of months of training.

In the Kumite event Luke had 3 big fights. Luke ended up winning 2 of the fights and winning a bronze medal.

So Over All JKS North Shore won

1 x Gold

1 x Silver

2 x Bronze medals

Well Done to all those who attended. It was a big effort and I am so proud oif each one of you.

Keep it up

Oss

Sean

Kanzawa Visit as per Nick Krajancic

Training Day with Kancho Kanazawa by Nick Krajancic

Nick__Kanza.jpg

The training was at a small Dojo in New Lynn. Approximately 30 people turned up for the seminar- most of them black belts!

Although most of the people there had already trained with the Kanazawas at previous sessions, there was still a buzz in the air. When Kanazawa turned up (fashionably late) the Dojo went silent. Kanazawa senior had a big grin on his face & it was obvious he was looking forward to the session.

Kanazawa jnr took us through the warm-ups, and what followed was a solid 2 hours of ‘advanced basics’ if that makes sense. The Kanazawas’ focused on technique, primarily positioning of the hands through-out a Tsuki; with the major emphasis on the mid-point of the movement. This was followed by instruction on kicks, particularly Yoko Geri & Ushiro Geri- emphasis this time was on keeping the body balanced.

Finally, we practised 4 types of Sanbon Kumite, the blocking techniques were emphasised, and each set using blocking types found in the Heian Katas. This was useful in demonstrating the bunkai of these katas.

The time disappeared, and Kanazawa was more than happy to sign my book (with his famous ‘Mt Fuji’ drawing) & pose for photographs.

The big things I learnt from the seminar:

  •  Spirit first: technique second
  • You don’t have to have deep stances to perfect a kick- better to be in a natural stance and be balanced.
  • Balance is the most important aspect of executing a kick.
  • Learn techniques slowly-speed will come later when you are comfortable with the technique
  • Simple movements can be the hardest to perfect
  • Don’t limit yourself to a small number of blocks- look to your Heian Katas for effective blocks that are rarely used- these blocks can be used to advantage against an opponent who is not expecting them.
  • Colour of your belt is unimportant- senior black belts needed as much guidance on basic techniques as did coloured belts.
  • Even when you are a master, there is time to share a joke with your students.

May news

Well another tournament completed and yet again JKS North Shore did admirably well by achieving 4 Medal placing’s,  We had six students attend the Auckland Kyu grade open tournament. Emio, Liam, Zander, Mike, Nilim and James all attend the tournament and did a fantastic job in representing JKS North Shore.

Kata

1st up was Mike, James and Nilim in the adult men’s division unfortunately all got knocked out in the first rounds. Although none of them achieved any wins in this division we still showed an improvement on our kata. Maybe it was too early for us but we need to look at the smaller things to start winning. Mike and James did Heian Jondan and Nilim did Heian Sandan.

James had a second chance in the cadet division with a similar result but a much better executed Heian Jondan Kata.

Emio was first Up for the Juniors and won Two of his three round with Heian sandan, The 3rd Heian Sandan was unfortunately not at the same standard as the previous two but he managed to bag a silver for his efforts.

Zander and Liam both unfortunately got knocked out in the first rounds of their bouts, but having to do this for the first time in a competition was fantastic. They both possibly deserved to go through to the next round but unfortunately did not get the nod from the judges.

Kumite

Mike and Nilim were the 1st one’s to show off our fighting styles, Mike shot out to a good lead but unfortunately lost the fight in the last minute he lost 5-7 to the eventual winner of the competition.

Nilim showed a marked improvement in his fight and managed to score a point. Unfortunately he went down 1-2

James was up in the cadet category and made a good fight of it. Although losing the 1st match, he managed to win the second in overtime to take out the Bronze. "James do not make things so hard for yourself next time! That Bronze could have been gold."

It was the first time Zander was put into the situation of fighting in a completion and man did he do well. In the first fight Zander unfortunately lost and did not score. His second fight was great. He managed to score 3 points and only lost by one. Better luck next time Zander.

Emio had the hardest day of all and the hardest rout to get through to the final.. His first fight started of sluggish until he worked out a combination that scored. His 1st three fights all where cut short as he won them by the 8 point advantage mercy law. Scoring 4 x  nihon’s (2 pointers) in each fight. By the time the fourth or gold medal fight arrived he had scored 24 points and had 4 minutes plus fighting time under the belt. Hi opponent was a lot fresher as he had only 2 fights . Emio was a little tired at this stage and just did not have the energy to continue the fabulous run. He unfortunately lost this fight but only just, the final score was 0-1. Well done Emio.

Liam had a huge challenge in his 1st fight, his opponent was very tall. Although the odds were stacked up against Liam certainly gave it his best. He only just lost the fight. On the repicharge Liam managed to win with two fantastic Sanbon’s (3 pointers) to the head. This was a great fight and the win  6-2 managed to pocket Liam a Bronze medal. Well done Liam
