August News

Hello all

Well believe it or not we are in the middle..  sorry end of August.

Well the cold morning trainings looks to be a thing of the past as its starting to get warmer as we head into spring. No more 3-4 deg Saturday morning training thinking your toes are going to fall off. You will also notice it will  take you less time to warm up the muscles, Giving us a little more time to do the very important training. Please take your time and view this link on warm up procedures and stretches to prevent pulling muscles.

Tournament.

May news

Well another tournament completed and yet again JKS North Shore did admirably well by achieving 4 Medal placing’s,  We had six students attend the Auckland Kyu grade open tournament. Emio, Liam, Zander, Mike, Nilim and James all attend the tournament and did a fantastic job in representing JKS North Shore.

Kata

1st up was Mike, James and Nilim in the adult men’s division unfortunately all got knocked out in the first rounds. Although none of them achieved any wins in this division we still showed an improvement on our kata. Maybe it was too early for us but we need to look at the smaller things to start winning. Mike and James did Heian Jondan and Nilim did Heian Sandan.

James had a second chance in the cadet division with a similar result but a much better executed Heian Jondan Kata.

Emio was first Up for the Juniors and won Two of his three round with Heian sandan, The 3rd Heian Sandan was unfortunately not at the same standard as the previous two but he managed to bag a silver for his efforts.

Zander and Liam both unfortunately got knocked out in the first rounds of their bouts, but having to do this for the first time in a competition was fantastic. They both possibly deserved to go through to the next round but unfortunately did not get the nod from the judges.

Kumite

Mike and Nilim were the 1st one’s to show off our fighting styles, Mike shot out to a good lead but unfortunately lost the fight in the last minute he lost 5-7 to the eventual winner of the competition.

Nilim showed a marked improvement in his fight and managed to score a point. Unfortunately he went down 1-2

James was up in the cadet category and made a good fight of it. Although losing the 1st match, he managed to win the second in overtime to take out the Bronze. "James do not make things so hard for yourself next time! That Bronze could have been gold."

It was the first time Zander was put into the situation of fighting in a completion and man did he do well. In the first fight Zander unfortunately lost and did not score. His second fight was great. He managed to score 3 points and only lost by one. Better luck next time Zander.

Emio had the hardest day of all and the hardest rout to get through to the final.. His first fight started of sluggish until he worked out a combination that scored. His 1st three fights all where cut short as he won them by the 8 point advantage mercy law. Scoring 4 x  nihon’s (2 pointers) in each fight. By the time the fourth or gold medal fight arrived he had scored 24 points and had 4 minutes plus fighting time under the belt. Hi opponent was a lot fresher as he had only 2 fights . Emio was a little tired at this stage and just did not have the energy to continue the fabulous run. He unfortunately lost this fight but only just, the final score was 0-1. Well done Emio.

Liam had a huge challenge in his 1st fight, his opponent was very tall. Although the odds were stacked up against Liam certainly gave it his best. He only just lost the fight. On the repicharge Liam managed to win with two fantastic Sanbon’s (3 pointers) to the head. This was a great fight and the win  6-2 managed to pocket Liam a Bronze medal. Well done Liam

So far we have attended 2 tournaments and have managed to gain 8 Medals. Click here to see the medal table. To all the participants well done.

May News

We at the end of May allready and wow how busy has it been

Counties shotokan tournament

On the 22nd may we entered 5 students into our 1st tournament of the year Emio, Jamie, James, Nilim, Nick and Mike.

Kata

Emio was up first with his kata and did a fantastic Heian Sandan witch pocketed him a Gold medal. Well-done Emio the hard work you have been putting in has certainly paid off.

Jamie was next up, He unfortunately did not place in the medal standings but did Heian Jondan that would of won most tournaments but we should of rethought this and practices more on the Shite kata’s Don’t worry Jamie next time will be better as we will have the correct kata for you. Jamie place 5th with a junior Kata, - Good effort

James run through Heian Jondan but unfortunately was not successful, he stumbled a little. I think a little more training on the higher kata’s will be required for James.

Nilim and Nick where the next two to go. Nilim did a fantastic Heian Sandan earning a tie for 2nd, He had to do another Kata to break the tie. Unfortunately Nilim went and forgot Heian Nidan but did manage to get the bronze medal – Well done Nilim

Mike has being training with JKS for three weeks he did Heian Sandan and was up against brown belts doing more advanced kata. He got a 4th equal placing, just outside the medals.

Kumite

Both Jamie and Emio fought admirably but unfortunately just out classed and never made it to the 2nd round .

James managed to go through to the final round buy winning two rounds but lost out 1-2 in the final round. James won silver

Nilim and Nick both won there 1st round. Nick won his first round with in 10 sec, Hi second fight also only lasted about 10secounds when he unfortunately made to much contact was disqualified. Nilim on his 2nd round was not the same fighter as he had shown in round one.

Mike quickly won his 1st round with a mawashi to the head, the fight was over in 5 seconds. His 2nd round was also a quick affair with his opponent scoring 2 punches in quick succession. Mike however went to the 3-4 play off which he one in a split second with a attack that the opponent did not see and won the bout

Our Medal total was

1 x Gold Emio for Kata

1 x Bronze for Nilim – Kata

1 x Silver for James – Kumite

1 x bronze for Mike - Kumite

Sensei Charles Lee, JKS rokudan and the Chief Instructor of the JKS Hawaii

Sensei Charles Lee, JKS rokudan and the Chief Instructor of the JKS Hawaii  was in Auckland in March 2010. All.jpg

Shotokan karate seminar with Sensei Charles Lee, JKS rokudan, started on Wednesday 24th March 2010 at Whenuapai Primary School. Final classes were on Saturday 27th with grading for Nidan and Sandan. Plenty of dynamic moves, techniques and katas in Asai Sensei style .

Our first class consisted Sensei Lee ran us through the following techniques.

·         Basics (hikite - stretch - snap - winding up)

·          Combinations (kizami - gyaku - oi zuki)

·         Combinations with Yori ashi

·         Combinations with spins

After we where well and truly worn out from this he then pushed on and went through the main Shitei Kata’s, Heian Shodan,Sandra.jpg  Bassai Dai, Hangetsu, Kanku Dai, Empi and Join.

On Saturday we continued that Moring with a whole lot of spinning techniques and combination followed by the five Junro kata’s.

The Afternoon class carried on where we left off, more spins, with more kicking techniques and punching techniques.

We had to try and relax ourselves making our bodies soft. Sensei Lee stressed that Natural and relaxed karate is the key to lifelong karate. We naturally did some natural exercise to point out this fact.

The last of the afternoon seson was devoted to a bit of Kumite – Free style, with a point being stressed that one had to have full control and if you are better than the opponent in the Dojo it’s your job to help the weaker person increase their skills.

After this and with tired legs it was time to do the Dan grading. Sandra and I were both examined for out next level of karate. Sandra - San-dan and Myself – Ni-Dan.

I can thankfully report we both passed.

Thank you to Sandra and Sensei’s  Damir and Cooper for helping me get to this level.

Thank you to all the students that showed incredible support from JKS North shore for this event. We had a good number of people attend.

Welcome to new members

Welcome Alicia, Kyle, Nick, Daniel, Jamie, Luke, Tania, Anrich, Liam and Angie

Well done, you have taken the first and hardest step, turning up and giving it a go !

Welcome to JKS North shore we hope you enjoy the club

Tip for Kata – The 6 easy step approach  - From Sensei Trevor (Jks chch)

Kata is critical to your success in Karate whether it be grading, competition kata, fighting or self defense. It helps to groove techniques, create visualization, speed, timing, balance, power, focus and ‘chi’.

There is a method I adopt for learning new Kata and I know how hard it can be! Shotokan has 26 kata and JKS added 5 more with the introduction of the Junro series.

The steps I take are as follows:  Counties_2009_-_Jamie_-_Heian_Jondan5.jpg

  • Step 1 ~ Sequence. You need to simply walk through the sequence in a relaxed manner ~ Know which way to go, which block, punch etc using little technique.
  • Step 2 ~ Technical. Now you know the sequence and which way to go, start to perfect the technique. Imagine if someone where to take a photo, would it look correct. Best to do the technical in slow motion as well as medium and then powerful
  • Step 3 ~ Bunkai. This is critical. Bunkai (application) teaches how to apply the techniques, direction, balance, kime, intent, focus, speed and most importantly ~ timing.
  • Step 4 ~ Rhythm. This where you can now apply the technique with understanding of the application and apply a rhythm to kata. When fast, when slow, smoothness and transitions between movements.
  • Step 5 ~ Realism. This is where you visualise, interpret, apply, all the previous work and demonstrate and brings the kata to life. People watching will see the attackers as you do and understand the impact and purpose of the Kata.
  • Step 6 ~ Practice. Nothing but practice will improve you kata, as long as you have the foundation correct as noted in points 1 to 5.

See you all at training

Osu
